DIY Toxin-free Hair Pomade

May 14, 2019

Hair pomade.  Yeah…it’s not always harmless.  Thankfully, a lot of companies are being held accountable for their toxic products, and more and more of them are turning to all-natural ingredients.  Buuuuuut…there are still SO many out there putting out some toxic-filled products for you to buy off a shelf that is authorized by the FDA.

Propylparaben, Fragrance, Lilial, Lyrol, and Benzyl Salicylate.

These are just a few of the toxic ingredients found in many hair products today.

Several of these ingredients are endocrine (hormone) disruptors, which is not a good thing.  These disruptors can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders.[1] Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by hormone disruptors. Specifically, endocrine disruptors may be associated with the development of learning disabilities, severe attention deficit disordercognitive and brain development problems; deformations of the body (including limbs); breast cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid and other cancers; sexual development problems such as feminizing of males or masculinizing effects on females, etc.[2]

Sooooo….basically we try to avoid these guys in our home as much as humanly possible.

Without further ado, let’s get right to the hair pomade that will not cause your eyeballs to fall out (just kidding…your eyeballs won’t fall out if you use some toxic hair product…I mean probably not…definitely don’t rub it all over your eyeball, just in case).

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Beeswax

3 Tbsp Shea Butter

4 Tbsp Jojoba Oil

10-20 drops of essential oils (I highly recommend these because they are organic and have NO toxins in them)

Store in a glass container.

I used 5 drops each of Lavender, Frankincense, Cedarwood, and Geranium.

Melt beeswax in a double boiler over low heat. When the beeswax is melted, add in shea butter. When the mixture is melted, add jojoba and stir until just melted. Pour mixture into a container and allow it to cool slightly, then add your essential oils. Don’t wait too long, though.  The beeswax solidifies quickly, so you want to add the oils in before that happens. Mix once again and allow it to set to a solid paste.

*Don’t use a wooden or plastic utensil to mix. The essential oils tend to cling to those materials. Stainless steel is a preferable material when mixing oils into something, or even a toothpick.

Wes says that he is really enjoying this pomade.  I may try a few more versions in the future to see what we like best, but for now, this is giving Wes’s hair a little more flair.

Have you found any other ingredients really make a DIY pomade better?  Like arrowroot or coconut oil?  Let me know in the comments!
